About Beavers

Beavers are native to the Sierra Nevada mountains and almost all of North America from Hudson Bay to Mexico. Hunted for fur until almost extinct, now scientists know that Beaver dams and ponds provide important habitat for fish and wildlife, and benefit water quality by filtering out pollutants, reducing erosion, and replenishing water tables.  Conflicts are easily resolved, with proven and practical flood control devices and tree protection.

Simple Solutions

Sierra Wildlife Coalition volunteers have installed simple solutions for potential conflicts with beavers and their dams throughout the area.  (See Co-existing page)

Pond Levelers, pipe and fence devices that keep a beaver pond at an acceptable level, are inexpensive and easy to install.  For protecting trees from beaver chewing, a gritty mixture of non-toxic latex paint and sand is effective and invisible.  Please call or email if you see potential problems.

Other Wildlife

We are so lucky in the Tahoe Truckee area to live close to beautiful natural areas with a rich diversity of wildlife.  But, as our homes encroach on wildlife habitat, conflicts can arise.  We work with agencies and homeowners to promote non-lethal solutions to any problems and the simple and easy  precautions that prevent conflicts in the first place.

We also encourage responsible pet ownership, for the safety of our pets and our wildlife.

Get Involved

We need volunteers to look for and monitor any beaver activity in your neighborhood, new dams or tree chewing, so we can prevent any problems before they happen.

To resolve any conflicts with beavers, our volunteers can provide information and free assistance.  We will install flood control devices or help homeowners protect their valuable trees.

Together we can do this!
